Singhs are Basketball Queens

Four Varanasi-born, now Delhi-based, sisters are these days in the verge of being the face of the Indian women’s national basketball team.
Divya was captain of the Indian team at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and Prashanti, who is employed by MTNL, a team member. Akansha is a Delhi University student and the youngest, Pratima, has skippered India Juniors. There is a fifth sister also, Priyanka, who is the oldest but who represented only her state before becoming a basketball coach.

‘‘I’m looking forward to the day when we all get to represent India in the same team. That would be something special: one family, comprising more than half the team,’’ says Divya Singh, the eldest of the sisters who was captain at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Besides basketball skill, the sisters are blessed with attractive looks that make them stand out at national and international tournaments.

When Divya left for the United States to gain a degree in sports management at the Delaware University, the Singh Sisters — also referred to as the ‘Spice Girls’ of Indian basketball — were down to three. But now, with the youngest sibling Prathima joining Prashanti and Akansha, the trio is back in action in sizzling form on the court.
